Your web site looks fantastic. Back in the '70s I worked with John Schadt, one of CVFD's life members, when we both worked for the old NY Telephone Company. I don't know if he's still around, but we always used to chat about our department's goings on. Keep up the good work and be safe.

My Grandfather, William Aurick was one of your founding members. I visited local family in July and drove over to CV to see his old house and the Fire Station.
It brought back so many memories! Getting to push the button in his station wagon to turn on his siren, attending my Grandparents 50th anniversary party held at the fire house. As well as visiting Santa, who resembled Grandpa alot!
On this visit, I was so pleased to see how big the Firehouse has become and the equipment parked inside.
I am certain my Grandpa Bill and his old Firefighter friends would be extremely proud of how you have all carried on this legacy and will hand it to others someday.
Good work, brave work!!

My dad, Al Calvosa was a member around 1960. I learned to swim in the lake across the road and my brother and I caught the schoolbus each morning in front of the old barn. I remember some pretty wild shindigs, especially 4th of july

I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all of the firemen who came out to help my husband and I last night on the bear mountain. We hit a large rock and our car was unable to move. It was a very scary ordeal but as soon as you guys arrived you all took charge! It was unbelievable cold but you guys never once left the scene. You did however make sure I was safe in a toasty warm vehicle. I wish I knew all of your names but one I do know is Tom. Thank you Tom for making sure I got home safely that night. All of you guys are truly the bravest and the best! THANK YOU!

Brothers & Sisters,

I, along with Pat Troy, had the opportunity to visit with Sergeant Evan Shiels last Friday at the Walter Reed Medical Center. Sgt. Shiels is the son of Julie (LAOH in NY) and Ron Shiels. He has served 2 tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. In September he and his unit were hit by an IED which shattered his lower leg and caused other damage. He is recovering in Maryland and is doing well. His parents are in a small suite with him and will be bringing him back to NY for Christmas from about the 21st of December – January 4th.

His contact information is below and I would encourage any member of the AOH / LAOH to reach out to him and his family to show your support and try to pay him a visit. He likes to read and is in need of books. If anyone is able to take him out to lunch or dinner (he can’t venture to far from the base) I am sure he would appreciate it. So please call him to schedule a time to visit before the 21st or when he returns in January.

He may be getting transferred at the end of January to San Antonio to finish his recovery with the other members of his unit that were also injured. Like a true warrior he is anxious to return to active duty in Afghanistan.

There are hundreds of soldiers at that facility that are recovering from battle wounds – many of them have lost limbs and are using prosthetics or are in wheel chairs. Pat Troy and I discussed organizing an Irish concert before St. Patrick’s Day at the building’s cafeteria which can probably hold about 200 or so. If you would like to get involved with this effort please respond to this e-mail and I will keep you informed.

SSG EVAN O. SHIELS

845-656-0856 (Evan’s cell phone)
BLDG. 62 ROOM 415E
WALTER REED NATIONAL MILITARY MEDICAL CENTER
BETHESDA MD 20889

If you go to visit the address is 8901 Wisconsin Ave, Bethesda, MD. Enter the facility at GATE1 which is Wood Road. Proceed on Wood Road and take a left onto Palmer Road and then left on Beale Rd – proceed to Building 62 and park in the circle in front of the building.

Warm Regards and Merry Christmas!

Please share this with others in the AOH / LAOH

Of course I knew them all, I was president in '73 and '74 (you got my first name wrong)...I was very active in dept from "70 till '85.....some of the best years of my life. Ron Heil was a great friend 'til he moved to Fla, he was a great softball player. Maybe someday if I'm in NY I'll stop by on Sunday morning for radio check!

I remember growing up around the old fire station. My Dad, Walt Beasley served the department from the mid sixties until we moved in 1972. My Dad passed away from cancer 14 years ago. I think growing up around the fire department lead me to my career choice later in life. I served as a paid city fire fighter in N.M. until 2004. I now own a fire and explosion investigation company in the Albuquerque area. I too remember a lot of the firefighters from my Dads days. The picnics at 4th of July at "Uncle George's" with my childhood friend and neighbor Ed Robinson. My Dads Ex-Chief plaque still hangs in my office. I also have my Dads old helmet front on display. In fact I recently ran across his C.V.V.F.D. softball team shirt, seems like a hundred years ago. Great site, I enjoyed visiting, brought back a lot of good memories.
